About this yard

Hyde Park Stables sits at 63 Bathurst Mews in Westminster, one of the last remaining working mews with horses in Central London. The site has a riding history stretching back over 300 years, with Rotten Row in Hyde Park recognised as England's most famous equestrian route. Under the current ownership of Ellie Hall McAteer, the stables are run with a clear focus: making riding accessible in the city, for visitors and Londoners alike.

Rides go out into Hyde Park itself, alongside The Serpentine lake and along Rotten Row, a setting that is genuinely unlike anything else available in a capital city. All rides are escorted by qualified instructors. Every rider starts on the lead rein while the instructor assesses ability, and the pace is adjusted accordingly. Novices stay safely led; more experienced riders can work independently once assessed.

Sessions are available in three formats. Semi-private rides are for two or more riders sharing a mounted escort. Private rides are one-to-one with a mounted escort through the park. Arena lessons take place in the outdoor arena within the park, with a maximum of four child riders or three adult riders sharing an instructor. The same formats and pricing apply seven days a week.

Alongside the riding school, the Hall McAteer family operates Hyde Park Showjumpers, an elite showjumping yard north of London competing at international level.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need riding experience?
No experience is needed at all. Hyde Park Stables welcomes complete beginners, and all rides are escorted by qualified instructors. Every rider starts on the lead rein while the instructor assesses your ability, novices stay safely led throughout, and more experienced riders can work independently once assessed. Just be honest about your level when you book so the right horse and format can be arranged.
What ages do you accept?
The minimum age is four years old. Children aged four, five and six must be booked as a private session, they cannot join semi-private rides. There is no upper age limit, and riders of all abilities are welcome.
What are the different session types?
There are three options. Semi-private rides are park or arena sessions for two or more riders sharing a mounted escort, at £115 per person per hour. Private rides are one-to-one with a mounted escort through the park or in the arena, at £145 per person per hour, a course of 10 rides is available for £1,300. All prices apply seven days a week and include helmet and boot hire.
Where exactly do the rides go?
Rides go into Hyde Park itself, along Rotten Row, one of the most famous equestrian routes in England, with a riding history of over 300 years, and beside The Serpentine lake. It is a genuinely extraordinary setting for horse riding in a capital city. Arena lessons take place in the outdoor arena within the park.
Is there a weight limit?
Yes. The maximum weight is 13 stone, 80kg or 180 lbs. This limit is strictly observed. If you are unsure, please contact the stables before booking.
What do I need to bring?
Very little. Helmets, riding boots, rain jackets and waterproof trousers are all provided as part of your session. Wear long trousers, jodhpurs or breeches are ideal, but leggings or jogging bottoms are fine. Avoid scarves, loose long tops, or anything that could get caught in tack. Flat shoes and trainers are not suitable.
How do I book?
All bookings are made through the online booking request form on the website at hydeparkstables.com. Walk-ins are not accepted. All ages and abilities are welcome, and sessions run seven days a week with the first ride at 9am and the last ride starting at 3pm.
What is the cancellation policy?
Rides are non-refundable. To reschedule a weekend booking, one week's notice is required. For a weekday booking, two days' notice is needed. Contact the stables as early as possible if your plans change.
