About this yard

Acrecliffe Equestrian Centre was established in 1964 and has grown over six decades into one of West Yorkshire's most respected equestrian establishments. Set across 30 acres on the outskirts of Otley, it holds both BHS Approved Centre and ABRS examination venue status, dual accreditation reflecting exceptional standards of facilities and instruction. Instructors hold qualifications with the BHS, ABRS, and the Side Saddle Association, and the centre serves as a Pony Club venue and base for the Changing Lives Through Horses programme. For those pursuing professional careers, Acrecliffe delivers the full BHS Professional Pathway up to Stage 4, with a strong assessment track record. Stabling for 45 horses and well-maintained indoor and outdoor arenas provide clear progression for riders at every stage.

Frequently asked questions

I'm a complete beginner, can I take lessons here?
Acrecliffe is primarily a professional training and examination centre for BHS qualifications, but the centre does accommodate some adult beginners. Lessons are not available for young children as the centre no longer has suitable ponies. If you are an older beginner or returning rider, contact the centre directly to discuss what is available for your level.
What BHS qualifications can I work towards here?
Acrecliffe delivers the full BHS Career Pathway from Stage 1 to Stage 4, covering riding, horse care, coaching and stable management. Training is delivered in small, hands-on groups with bespoke, tailored programmes. Intensive and residential options are available, and the centre accepts BHS Transition Vouchers. Regular, small-format assessments are held on site for all stages.
Do you offer hacks or trail rides?
No. Acrecliffe does not offer hacks or trail riding. The centre focuses on arena-based lessons, professional qualifications, and assessment work.
Is there a weight limit?
Yes. The centre has a general weight limit of 13.5 stones (approximately 86kg). If you are unsure whether this applies to you, contact the centre before booking.
How do I book a lesson?
All lessons are booked through the Hopoti online booking system. If it is your first session at Acrecliffe, you will also need to complete a Rider Registration Form before you ride. Links to both are available on the centre website.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance by phone or email. Cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice, and no-shows, are subject to a charge. If you need to move a booking to a different time on the same day, the centre will do its best to help, contact them directly.
Can I bring my own horse for training?
Yes. The centre has two holiday stables available for visiting students' horses. You must contact the centre in advance to book a stable, as availability is limited.
Can I get here by public transport?
Yes. Regular bus services pass the centre, and the nearest train station is Menston, with direct trains from Leeds and Bradford. Menston is within walking distance of the centre and has a bus service that stops at the end of the drive. Leeds Bradford Airport is around 5 miles away.
