About this yard

Cumbrian Heavy Horses is based at Baystone Bank Farm in the Whicham Valley, on the edge of the Lake District National Park south of Black Combe. It is the only BHS Approved ridden heavy horse riding centre in the world, run by Annie Rose since the business began on the Isle of Skye in 1997 before relocating to Cumbria in 2006.

The horses are all pure heavy breeds: Shires, Clydesdales, Suffolk Punches and Brabants. All are well-schooled and forward-going. Experiences range from gentle farm and fell rides through private farmland, through to the signature beach rides on the Irish Sea coast at Silecroft and Haverigg, wide, open, uncrowded beaches where the pace can build for experienced riders. Rides run in small groups of 5 to 9, all guided by qualified staff who assess ability honestly before each ride and match horses to riders accordingly.

Multi-day riding holidays with accommodation are available, including a Wasdale package based at a coaching inn in one of the most remote valleys in England. Carriage driving instruction is also offered. National Tourism Experience of the Year 2011.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need riding experience?
Some experience is strongly recommended. Honest information about your fitness, riding ability and experience is required at the time of booking. The team match horses to riders based on this information, and riders may be weighed on arrival for horse welfare reasons.
What breeds do you ride?
All horses are pure heavy horse breeds: Suffolk Punch, Shire, Clydesdale and Brabant drafts. These are large, forward-going horses, not novice lead-rein ponies. The team assesses each rider carefully before the ride.
How do I book?
Phone only, on 07769 588565 between 10am and 1pm Monday to Friday. Leave a clear message if unanswered. Online booking is not available. Rides fill quickly, especially for beach and fell packages.
Is the beach ride suitable for beginners?
The beach ride requires riders who can walk, trot and canter with confidence. The one-hour farm ride is better suited to those with less experience. The team will advise which option is right for you when you call.
