About this yard

There is genuinely nowhere else in England quite like the Centre of Horseback Combat. Set on the historic Gaddesden Estate, 2,000 acres of Hertfordshire countryside, on a traditional 1700s stable yard, the centre specialises in mounted archery, stunt riding and Cossack trick riding on specially trained horses. A 180-metre international-standard archery run is the centrepiece, with courses from beginner half-days through to advanced weekends and national competition events. The riding school licence is inspected annually by vets, tack and equipment are audited, and livery is available for those who want their horse kept somewhere genuinely out of the ordinary.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be an experienced rider?
No prior riding experience is needed for the horseback archery courses. You start with a ground archery session before getting on a horse, building confidence and technique at every stage. The horses are specially trained and experienced at this work, and instructors match pace to each rider. Complete beginners are very welcome.
What courses do you offer?
The main offerings are full day horseback archery courses (£199, 10:30am to 4:30pm), half day courses, weekend archery camps, summer evening club sessions, and advanced weekends for returning riders. Beyond archery, the centre runs Cossack trick riding (Dzhigitovka) lessons, stunt riding days, and a unique Rider Confidence Course for riders who want to overcome nerves or build security in the saddle. Guest instructors also run sessions in natural horsemanship, western riding and archery masterclasses throughout the year.
Is horseback archery available all year?
Horseback archery is seasonal. Sessions typically run from around March to the end of October, stopping when ground conditions become unsafe heading into winter. If it stays dry, the season may extend. Rider Confidence and other non-archery courses can run year-round. Always contact the centre to confirm current availability before travelling.
What age do you need to be?
The centre is not suitable for children under 14, due to the nature of the teaching programme and the horses used. There is no upper age limit, and the centre welcomes riders of all abilities including complete beginners, those returning to riding after a long break, and people with physical limitations who want a supportive environment.
Is the centre licensed and insured?
Yes. The centre holds a riding school licence with Dacorum Borough Council, renewed annually. This involves inspection by vets covering the horses, tack, equipment, stables, qualifications and first aid provision. The Centre of Horseback Combat Ltd carries £5,000,000 in public liability insurance. The centre is affiliated to the National Horseback Archery Society, the World Horseback Archery Federation (South Korea) and the International Equestrian Dzhigitovka Federation (Moscow).
How do I get there and is there parking?
The centre is located on the Gaddesden Estate, 3.5 miles north of Hemel Hempstead, close to M1 junctions 8 and 9. There is a large on-site parking area. The nearest train stations are Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted, both on the same line and around 30 minutes from central London. A taxi from either station costs approximately £13. Full directions are sent with your booking confirmation.
Can I bring spectators?
Spectators are welcome at no extra charge for most courses. The exception is the adult Rider Confidence Course, where spectators are not permitted due to the personal and sensitive nature of the work. If you are unsure, contact the centre before your visit.
Are dogs allowed?
No. The centre has its own wolf dogs and other animals on site, so dogs cannot be brought to the yard. There are public footpaths around the estate if you need to walk a dog nearby, and the large car park means dogs can remain in vehicles if needed.
